weekly digest 003 (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
tracks by dj jus ed, asc, brendon moeller, donato dozzy and monolake
welcome to the weekly digest! a new round-up spotlighting the music that has soundtracked my week <3
i spent most of last weekend curled up on the sofa nursing another stomach illness watching another cheesy YA tv series called off campus. it wasn’t great but served its purpose for brain numbing tv but one of the story lines in the show is centred around hannah working on a song to submit in a pop contest and her mentor asks her to talk about a track she’s had on repeat recently and why she has connected with it. this question wasn’t to do with the qualities of the track that she was drawn to but instead the mentor was asking her to dig into the way the track makes her feel as an exercise in finding her sound. this is what pulls me to write about music and share the tracks i love. it’s the emotions it evokes when you first listen to it or the memory entwined within the rhythms, new stories being formed with every play. this leads me into my first selection for this week…
asc - find yourself
i spoke about my recent set at open ground here - a new core dj memory unlocked. this is the track i closed the set with. a couple of tracks before i played a very dramatic, intense droney record. i can’t remember the name of it but when it ended and slowly flowed into the quietly touching gigi masin’s ‘the word love’, i heard a couple of people in the room collectively exhale deeply - a communal release. ‘find yourself’ felt like the perfect grounding moment to bring the room out of the sentimental journey we had been on for two hours with people existing in the room in various different states. some asleep, some cuddle up with loved ones, some wandering in and out. it’s so soothing, a complete massage on the nervous system with the twinkling allowing you to drift in and out of its orbit. it makes me want to cry with every listen as it holds you in whatever state you’re in.
dj jus ed - don’t answer the phone
this week was a very good week on discogs. sometimes i struggle to connect with anything as it’s not exactly hitting the mood i’m after. this week was different, sooo many hits! i went on a little early 00s levon vincent deep dive late last year when i was prepping for my horst club set and my search this week was a continuation of that sound. this week’s filter was 1990s & 2000s minimal, dub techno records and levon vincent & dj jus ed’s these games ep came up pretty early in that dig. ‘don’t answer my phone’ is probably my favourite from the release (i think), it’s so warm and bouncy. i love tracks that bounce! that bop! i want to play this early morning with the sun beaming through the trees.
brendon moeller – jazz space
another warm and fuzzy dubby delight. the full record is deliciously weird but for the sake of the digest i want to highlight ‘jazz’. it’s a little wonky with the asmr sound bites keeping you on your toes, not allowing you to ever get fully lost within the spacious 4/4 rhythm. constantly driving in pace, ‘jazz’ fully reveals its power at 1:31 and all bets are off. this track just makes me so happy!!!
monolake - invisible
ok this is my favourite discovery of the week and the track i’ve probably listened to the most. on the moodier, introspective side, this track is spooky! entranced by it’s electro breaks and haunting vocals that sound like they’re narrating a technical breakdown in an abandoned warehouse, or perhaps a space station, it has a menacing flare. if i was curating the soundtrack for the alien video games, i would make sure this is included.
donato dozzy - minded?
a bonus track to make up for missing last week’s digest. donato dozzy has such a skill for creating these slow builds within his music. he has the top grade bait for keeping you hooked. this one needs a little patience as it really blossoms from 6 minutes onwards but the rolling acid breaks are enough to make you want to stay to witness the magic, like the rare blooming flower epiphyllum oxypetalum.
