weekly digest 002 (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
tracks by carré, davina, the crystal method and valentino mora
welcome to the weekly digest! a new round-up spotlighting the music that has soundtracked my week <3
carré - mercy
i think i’ve listened to this track more than anything else this week. carré makes music for the lover girls, especially with her excellent run of vocal-heavy bootlegs and originals featuring the likes of bbyafricka and syd. when i pressed play the first time, my instant thought was: i can’t wait to get my heart broken and listen to this on repeat. carré has such a nack for making the subs glow, creating a warm environment for you to truly feel the kinda emotions that are deep within your bones. it’s a safe space here!
the crystal method – you know it's hard (koma & bones remix)
this track first caught my attention in the ig stories being posted from un:send over new years eve as it was happening. and now every time i listen to mad miran’s un:send recording (an amazing set to soundtrack heavy workouts btw, tried & tested this week!) the whole set is absolutely bonkers but this selection really stops you in its track. it really comes alive from around 4:20 minutes. those razor-sharp synths roaring with energy, transporting to an electric 90s sci-fi movie, i can’t help but think of the matrix every time i hear it. a pure rockstar track.
valentino mora - s-bahn
tomorrow is the second edition of abyss at open ground - a party that i’m a resident of. everything you read about that club is true so it’s a huge honour to be able to play there again tomorrow night. my contribution to the party is an ambient set to close the annex, bringing dancers back down to earth or a moment of respite from the healthy hedonism that will take place in the main room. abyss’ ethos is centred around the powerful healing energy that low end frequencies can offer us. this message is with me whilst i’m putting together the two-hour set whilst drawing inspiration from the moss-covered walls and earthy surroundings of the peak district where i spent my may day weekend. i haven’t spent anywhere near enough time connecting with nature but for this set i want to draw from all of the elements around us, from water, earth, fire and air. ‘s-bahn’ by valentino mora embodies three of those elements as it drifts along the swampy river, lit by the twinkling stars.
davina - don’t you want it
also in relation to the weekend in the peak district for a very special person’s hen do, this track was mentioned in one of the quiz rounds we did after a delicious homecooked three-course meal. as soon as it started playing with that glistening melody, memories flooded back from the first few years i started partying, adventuring to dekmantel every summer. a timeless beauty with an old-school soulful energy, this track sums up the giddiness i felt during those first years of discovering dance music and the connection it brings to those around you. dancing in the fields with the summer beaming down with your friends, getting to know new people with every turn, discovering new pockets of creativity neslted within beautiful surroundings - nothing quite beats it. i want to bottle up this feeling forever and davina does a very good job of doing just that. not to mention how pure it is with its intention from the label its released on and the smiling sunflower on the label. thank you for reminding me of this track hen crew <3
