untitled 909 podcast 259: caroune (live at ormside projects)
“this mix is the live recording of my osmura set from last november at ormside projects where i opened the night before yushh and konduku. i feel very inspired by both artists and i wanted this set to act as a bridge : setting the tone and preparing the musical universe that would unfold later in the night.”
we are thrilled to be hosting a live recording from one of our favourite opening sets we danced to last year by caroune, who warmed up the osmura party she co-runs with cosi, at ormside projects in november 2025. with the night unfolding into bass ecstasy and hypnotic wormholes with sets from yushh and konduku, caroune kicked off the proceedings wonderfully with a set that ripples and flows through ambient-flecked dub, dreamy half-time and psy-influenced percussive-driven rhythms.
launching two years, osmura is a record label, mix series and event series that explores the bridge between dub and deep techno and all the immersive textural soundscapes that are present within that. the mix series has hosted stories from the likes of annx, bartoli, softi, subsism, toé, tangela, dj wiggles, stone and more. on the label arm, they’ve released two compilations featuring tracks by solma, ophélie, viiaan, gillielove, caldera, atomic moog, shjva as well as two solo eps by much-loved producers sub basics and mirrorlake - an already excellent run for the label. and their party series, which now calls our favourite london venue, ormside projects, home, has housed sets from andy martin, tangela, dj ojo, ok eg and stone.
outside of her work with osmura, caroune is becoming a go-to dj within her own right, with a knack for weaving the beautiful and dark together to create magical world building whether that’s through the online mixes she has shared or sets at rebloom, transmissions festival, crescent london, kinetic, minuteuf, or ouroboros festival.
you’ll see at the end of this interview a little preview of our upcoming back-to-back which i’m really excited for! this will take place in paris next month, more details to be shared later this week :)
hey caroune! how are you doing? what have you been up to lately?
great, thank you! i’ve been off for the past two weeks spending christmas with my family in paris. i had nice food, went to great exhibitions, listened to a lot of music and spent quality time with the people i love. i always enjoy coming back to the city i grew up in, it’s filled with many memories which provide a sense of nostalgia.
let’s start from the very beginning, what was your first introduction to music in general and then more specifically electronic music?
my first introduction to music was probably as a child at home with my dad. he had a huge collection of vinyls and we would often put records on and dance together. he had a broad selection from house/disco, jazz, afro, oriental to french varieties. these early experiences created a strong bond with music and still influence my taste today.
my connection to electronic music came later, through the french scene by attending festivals in paris like peacock, weather and we love green in the early 2010s where i could attend sets from laurent garnier, nicolas jaar, vitalic, agar agar…
who was the first artist or band that you were a fan of?
probably madonna!! i was offered her ‘music’ album in 2000 and i remember dressing up with my friend and creating choreographies to her tracks. i was a creative child and always loved putting on a show which is probably why i enjoy djing so much today haha
was there a formative moment growing up, whether that’s seeing your favourite band live or an incredible dj set, that led you to this path?
when i moved to london, i listened a lot to nts radio, especially moxie’s wednesday show. after seeing her play one night, i told her how influential her radio show had been for me and that i wanted to start djing. her response “if you want to dj, go for it” stayed with me and gave me the push i needed to begin.
what is the most meaningful part of being an artist to you?
i’m very emotional and djing allows me to express my feelings through music and create deeper connections with people.
where do you look for sources of inspiration outside of music?
in nature, i really enjoy going for long walks in the woods: all my senses are alert, i find the light, sounds and smells very inspiring… travelling as well: discovering new cultures, landscapes and tastes feed my creativity. and finally movies, i love watching independent french and scandi movies : the roleplay, outfits, interior design, music are all very inspiring.
how has london & paris influenced or informed your sense of self and artistic output?
i was born and raised in paris within an armenian family. growing up in this multicultural environment played a key role in shaping my identity, broadening my creativity and sharpening my taste. later, moving to london was the opportunity to discover a new culture and creative landscape. today, i feel very inspired by the creativity of both cities from their music scene to their art, architecture, fashion, people…
what has been your most recent musical discovery that you’re obsessed with?
viiaan’s ‘taiko’ ep on qeone! i really enjoy the tribal influenced percussion and bass elements. viiaan is an artist i discovered this year and her sound and universe really resonate with me. we actually released with her last december on the osmura ‘transient glow’ compilation. she’s an incredibly versatile and talented artist, you should go and check her work if you don’t know her work yet.
what was the inspiration and motivation behind starting osmura?
i co-founded osmura with my former work colleague and now close friend cosi. we initially started osmura as a podcast series slowly evolving into nights and more recently label. we wanted a platform to express our love for music and clubbing and build a community around it. it’s been just over two years now since the creation of osmura and i feel very proud for everything we have achieved so far.
you’ve also contributed a mix for the 909 series, what’s the concept behind this one?
this mix is the live recording of my osmura set from last november at ormside projects where i opened the night before yushh and konduku. i feel very inspired by both artists and i wanted this set to act as a bridge : setting the tone and preparing the musical universe that would unfold later in the night.
when was the last time you were on the dance floor?
it was last november at cheek club organised by free movements, one of my favourite collectives in london. the events, curated by dan nicholls, often take place on sundays in intimate spaces. they bring together dj sets, live performances, instruments, poetry, documentaries… it goes beyond music which i really enjoy. the next one is on january 1st which i really hope to attend.
what are you most excited about right now?
i look forward to our set on february 12th in paris at point eph’ for motorium! it will be special to share the decks with you. i can’t wait :)))
what’s on your vision board at the moment?
we’re currently working on a new osmura release coming out in spring! it’s an absolute banger, i can’t wait to share it with everyone!
