Recommendations: June 2024
Having just returned to London a few days ago, I spent last weekend recharging my batteries (my watch says I slept for 33 hours & 19 hours across Friday and Saturday). The last week and a half has been spent in Portugal; the first part of trip in Crato for Waking Life and then a few days in Lisbon to decompress. I’ve been trying to work out how to write about Waking Life, what to disclose, how I felt during my time there, the sets I love etc, but it was such an intense, overwhelming and otherworldly experience that I’m going to leave it at that. I’ve never experienced anything like it and there’s something to be said for going completely off grid for 6 days surrounded by nature, art and music. My favourite sets from the week were upsammy, Richard Akingbehin & Tikiman, Nídia, Erika and Djrum’s live ambient performance ~ upsammy’s especially, I’m still thinking about how mind blowing it was. My friend and I left the dance floor for some air and a drink and she was in complete disbelief that there was only 10 minutes left of her 2-hour set ~ very unaware of how much time had passed during a set that felt it was rewiring my brain, especially with how loud and overstimulating the lights were during it. A full body experience.
Before heading to Waking Life, I went to the debut Pause party - a new Sunday affair hosted by DJ Python & Kit Seymour. A day party hosted at my favourite venue in London, Ormside Projects, Pause was a breath of fresh air from the heavy sounds that have been tainting Sundays in London as it took us back to the early 2000s with the sets mainly focusing on tech house and minimal soundscapes. It was glorious.
Oh and Goodness smashed it yet again with the sickeeeeest party at Fold at the beginning of the month. I hadn’t danced like that in forever. Literally glued to the dancefloor. Polygonia and Konduku played incredible deep techno sets, both incredibly fun, the first being bouncy and soft for the sunrise, the latter being peak time sexy and groovy. It was the first time seeing Yousuke Yukimatsu and discovering he is the biggest troll, in the best and most playful way, in that he completely breaks every (any) ‘rule’ of djing in a very punk & genuine way. You never know what’s coming next, keeping you completely gripped. So so inspiring. In awe. The way he was playing with tension, pushing and pulling between pop, gabba, hard dance and punk, in the short time I saw him play, he completely blew me away.
Earlier this month I released a new mix with the lovely Origins crew which you can listen back to here. Thank you Philip for including the mix in the Futurism Restated newsletter.
Excited to start working on the tracklist for my first Netil Radio show on the 17th July.
You can catch me playing Floorless Festival the first weekend of August with lots of friends and faves - tickets here.
My favourite party, playbody, returns next weekend with Andy Garvey, Amphia, Cass and HEZEN - more info here.
